Our Vision for Student Learning
At San Marin, every student is greeted by name and heard, reasons aloud with classmates through problems they cannot solve alone, drives their own thinking and revision, and leaves San Marin ready to think, contribute, and lead.

From Principal Boone
As the sun comes up this morning, I am remembering the sun setting last night on Corda Ranch at the Green and Gold fundraiser. Humility is our word this week, and it starts with thank you. Thank you to Brooke Gray, the force behind the event. Thank you to Janeen Brady and the extended Corda family. Thank you to our adult and student athlete volunteers. Thank you to the Novato community. What I saw was kindness, generosity, and down home hospitality.

Humility is also naming that we do not have the answer, or that we need help. For our students, that is what the Learning Lounge is for. It is open two afternoons a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00 to 5:00 PM in the Library. On Thursdays, tutors from 10,000 Degrees help with college and scholarship essays, resumes and job searches, Algebra 1, English, social studies, Spanish, and study skills, and there is peer tutoring in math and science. Attendance is how we keep those tutors. Please send your student.

Four school days this week. There is no school Monday. It is a staff development day.

The Addams Family opens Thursday in the Emily Gates PAC, with four performances through Sunday. Homecoming is next week. If your student is bringing a guest to the dance, the guest pass form is due Thursday.

New this week: a first look at the dashboard we are building for our WASC self-study, just below.
Andy Boone, Principal
WASC Self-Study
27 weeks to our visit, April 19 to 21. WASC accredits California high schools, and this is our self-study year. A team of educators from other schools will review our work and visit campus. Our staff met in their WASC committees for the first time on October 7. Each committee owns two or three of the 12 WASC standards. Next up: first drafts at our October 21 writing session.
Sneak peek
Our WASC dashboard
Humility is our word this week, and humility means asking hard questions. Are our programs working? We are building a dashboard so we can have honest conversations about it, as a staff and with our community. It will track the school year as it happens: where we are, what supports are in place, and whether they are moving the needle. Here is an early look.

prelim.
The share of students in the class who graduated with a regular diploma. Higher is better. The 2024-25 rate is the highest in these five years, and the highest level on the state Dashboard.
How we are responding
Our focus is every student with one or more D or F grades. Each one gets an intervention, such as Access time, a counselor or team contact, or a referral. The working name for this project is Back on Track; the name is not final yet. Every ninth grader has a named adult on our Freshman Support Team.
What we measure
How many students on the D and F list are off it by the next progress report.
Who leads it
Our project leads for each student group, and the Freshman Support Team.

The state's College/Career Indicator: the share of graduates rated Prepared because they met at least one measure, such as A-G plus another measure, college credit, passing AP exams, or a career pathway. Higher is better. Also the highest level on the state Dashboard.
How we are responding
Every senior one measure short of Prepared is named, with the measure they are closest to, and their family is contacted by November 1. Seniors with one college semester can register for a second by November 15.
What we measure
How many of those seniors reach a Prepared route by June.
Who leads it
Our counselors and assistant principals.

The share of graduates who finished the 15 college-prep courses the UC and CSU require, with a C or better. Higher is better. It is the gate to a four-year university, and it is one of our focus areas this year.
How we are responding
A November 1 check of which students are on track for A-G, by grade and student group, and a December check that the master schedule has enough A-G seats.
What we measure
Students on track for A-G, by grade and student group, at each check.
Who leads it
Our counselors and administrative team.

The share of students who missed 10 percent or more of school days, about 18 days in a full year, for any reason, excused or not. Lower is better. It went up in 2024-25, and it is on our watch list for this year.
How we are responding
Our attendance team reaches every chronically absent student and family with a letter or a meeting. Students who need more get coordinated support through COST, our Coordination of Services Team.
What we measure
How many of those students get below 10 percent absence by the end of the semester.
Who leads it
Our assistant principals and the attendance team, with our COST team.

The Mustang Way · Question 8 of 37
Humility · Humildad
What are you still learning?
¿Qué sigues aprendiendo?
What are you still learning? Last week's Sun named our September Mustang Way award winners, one freshman for each pillar. Ms. Crowley nominated the Humility winner. Here is some of what she wrote:

"What stands out to me is his ability to ask great questions, his general curiosity towards learning, and the desire to improve." She called him "a model of what it means to be humble on campus: lifting others up and engaging actively."

Asking great questions. Wanting to improve. Lifting others up. None of it requires having the answer. On the field, those three don't require athletic talent. Ask a coach who their favorite players of all time are, and they will name athletes who asked questions, worked to improve, and lifted others up.

For all of the adults reading this, including coaches, teachers, San Marin staff, parents, and caregivers, where in your life are you asking great questions, working toward improving, and lifting others up?
