One important thing first. New this year, every San Marin volunteer completes mandated reporter training. If you plan to help out at any point this year, please start now. You will not be able to volunteer until it is complete. The flyer and the registration link are further down.
The first two days brought great energy to campus, and Friday's rally was a hit. Our student leadership class set the tone for the year!
Before students arrived, our Instructional Lead Team met, our full staff met, and our coaches gathered at the NUSD coaches meeting. San Marin adults are working from one idea, and you are a critical part of it.

Culture = Values × Behaviors
What a school says it values, multiplied by how it actually behaves.
|
At San Marin it has a name: the Mustang Way. Mindset, Goal Setting, Humility, Respect, and Citizenship. Students, staff, coaches, families, and caregivers all work from the same five. You are part of it.
It starts with mindset. Here is mine for the year.
It starts with mindset. Here is mine for the year.
| 01 | Improving school culture. We are continuing our work to build community in every classroom and on every student and staff team. We are practicing the tools that let us repair harm when it happens. You will hear more about the Mustang Way this year, and we will be asking for your help with it. |
| 02 | Improving how we teach and create learning opportunities. Every staff member commits to growing professionally this year. We are moving ahead with Learning Walks, where teachers visit each other's classrooms and learn from what they see. Teachers are not the only ones teaching. Students will be teaching our staff and helping build the school they want to be part of. They have a lot to teach us. |
| 03 | Looking at student work throughout the year. We are starting early and keeping students at the center of it. I am happy to report that Nick Williams, who represents our STEM program on our Instructional Lead Team, is taking on an additional leadership role this year. He will help drive this work and our work on teaching practice. |
| 04 | Strengthening belonging. We are creating more opportunities for students and bringing more of them to the table. |
| 05 | Closing grading and access gaps. We are working to be more consistent across classrooms and more open to improving. |
This is also our WASC self-study year. WASC is the body that accredits California high schools. A team of educators from other schools will review our work and visit campus April 19 to 21. It is a chance to tell our story. We are genuinely looking forward to this opportunity.

Fall sports are underway. The importance of Mindset here includes coaches and fans as much as athletes.
Bad calls will happen. San Marin will lose contests. That is sports. Accepting that and behaving respectfully is the mindset we are looking for. How you respond matters. Our student athletes see it. The whole community sees it.
